This project is the result of an open competition won in 1993 and consists of a 26,000-seat main stadium purpose-designed for soccer, with VIP suites, and an adjoining stadium for classical track and field events, which includes a secondary football pitch. There is an additional practice pitch with warm-up tracks for track and field athletes.

An undulating steel trussed canopy suspended from circular concrete columns topped by stainless steel clad pylons architectonically unifies the two stadia.

The iconic canopy defines a 10-story high “stoa” between the two stadium superstructures of fair-faced reinforced concrete. The entire complex is built to FIFA and UEFA specifications and with an additional planned phase will be able to accommodate over 40,000 seated spectators, making it one of the largest and most comprehensive projects of its kind in the Eastern Mediterranean.
