This is a Black Baptist community church located in the East New York section of Brooklyn.
The architect saw the design challenge as an opportunity to reach beyond the generic program requirements set out by the congregatrion, to create a strong visual symbol, an anchor for a community determined to strengthen its identity in a problematic environment.
The new sanctuary with an area of 4700 square feet is located within a typical 40' x 90' mid block site. It is connected internally to the existing building, which now serves as a daycare and community center. The design incorporates architectural elements and interior places, which give spatial definition to the pulpit, the ritual of baptism, and the role of music, all of essential meaning in the practice of the Baptist faith.
